Micro TESE procedure Perth
What is
micro TESE?
Micro TESE for men with non-obstructive azoospermia
Who is micro TESE for?
Some men don’t have sperm in their semen and that is a reason to see a fertility specialist who has a special interest in male infertility.
If you have been told you don’t have sperm in your ejaculate, there may be several causes. Micro TESE is an option for men with non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA). It means the cause is related to actual testicular tissue damage or you have a genetic disorder.
Testicular damage distinguishes these cases from two other causes of azoospermia:
- Endocrine causes/hormone imbalances: if that is the reason for azoospermia, your fertility specialist can help you with the treatment of your hormone deficiency.
- Obstructive azoospermia: if sperm passage into the ejaculate is not possible because of obstruction or retrograde ejaculation. In that case, we can help you with an (outpatient) needle TESA procedure.
"So when I perform micro TESE I search for sperm from a very limited number of active seminiferous tubules (where sperm is produced and transported) in the testes. There is a 40% chance we actually find sperm in men who have been told they have non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA), or in other words a lack of sperm in their semen."

What is involved in the procedure?
Micro TESE is an advanced technique used to harvest sperm. It’s done under general anaesthetic through a small incision in the scrotum. A powerful operating microscope is used in order to better identify potential tubules.
Typically, two scientists are present in the operating theatre in order to immediately examine the samples for sperm. This technique has largely replaced random testicular biopsies and more likely lead to successful retrieval.
" I undertake all Micro TESE procedures at Bethesda Day Hospital where the Fertility Specialists Clinic is located as well. That is a huge advantage because we examine the sperm samples on the spot, and you will be informed about the success of the procedure on the same day. You won’t need to spend the night at the hospital. I will give you detailed instructions about post-op care. I will review your wound the week after surgery."
Perth fertility specialist with a special interest in male infertility
Why Dr Roger Perkins for micro TESE?
"Andrology is the counterpart to gynaecology and deals with male health. As a gynaecologist and fertility specialist I work with women and men, and when the cause of infertility has a male factor, I am one of the few doctors in Perth who can perform a range of male infertility treatments, including micro TESE."
On top of my expertise and specialised skill set, there are a few more advantages my practice offers.
The micro TESE procedure is undertaken in the same facility as the Fertility Specialists Clinic with whom I am associated. In this way, all the highly trained and experienced staff and resources are present under one roof. We do not need to travel to other hospitals far removed from our Clinic and risk transporting sperm across Perth. All staff, including scientists, and theatre nurses are all located together. This ensures seamless care.
When you need micro TESE we can schedule your procedure within a few weeks.

TESA
Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA) is a technique to extract sperm from the testis with a needle. It is used in cases where men don’t have sperm in the ejaculate (azoospermia) caused by a blockage.
